AFL Legend Nicky Winmar Charged with Assault: Court Hearing Update (2026)

Former AFL legend Nicky Winmar faces serious assault allegations, with a remote hearing in Melbourne Magistrates Court. The 60-year-old, whose legal name is Neil, was charged in July with two counts of assault and intentionally choking or strangling a woman. The incidents allegedly occurred on July 18, 2025, in Melbourne. This comes as prosecutors seek to separate the case from unrelated charges Winmar faces in Kerang. The allegations include twisting a woman's arm and dragging her by the hair in Cohuna on May 14, 2025. The court heard that the facts of the case are disputed, and the matter has been adjourned to a one-day hearing on August 11. Winmar, who did not speak during the brief hearing, remains on bail. He is also due to face Kerang Magistrates Court on January 29 for the Cohuna incident. Winmar's career was marked by his fight against racism, including a famous stand against racial abuse in 1993. He is now co-leading a landmark class action against the AFL in the Victorian Supreme Court, highlighting his ongoing commitment to justice.
