If these readings are confirmed, they would surpass the grim records set back in 2009, a year marked by the tragic Black Saturday bushfires that claimed 173 lives in the state.
While thankfully no fatalities have been reported during this heat wave, authorities in Victoria are on high alert due to three forest fires that are raging uncontrollably. In Melbourne, the state’s capital and largest city, residents felt the oppressive heat acutely, especially noticeable at Melbourne Park, where the usually vibrant atmosphere surrounding the Australian Open tennis tournament dwindled significantly. The sweltering conditions led to a significant decrease in crowds, transforming what is typically a bustling event into a near-empty venue.
In response to the extreme temperatures, event organizers implemented stringent heat safety protocols. They closed the retractable roofs of the main arenas and postponed matches on the outer courts that lack coverage. During a particularly intense quarter-final match between Aryna Sabalenka and Iva Jovic, players were seen clutching ice packs and portable fans during breaks, highlighting the challenging conditions athletes faced under the relentless sun.
Photographers capturing the action were provided with cushions to protect against heat-related injuries while sitting down, and many covered their cameras with towels to prevent overheating or potential damage. Spectators also sought relief from the heat, lining up in front of large misting fans or retreating to air-conditioned areas within the venue.
Attendance at the event has seen a drastic drop; from a peak of 50,000 during Monday's sessions, the number plummeted to just 21,000 on Tuesday as people heeded health warnings and opted to stay indoors.
Although temperatures are predicted to decline by Wednesday, the heat wave is expected to persist until the weekend, following another scorching episode earlier this month. This summer has emerged as one of the hottest in Australia’s history, with parts of New South Wales and South Australia recording temperatures that shatter previous records set during the catastrophic summer of forest fires in 2019.
