Britain's Most Hated Cycle Lane: The Story Behind Its Removal (2026)

The much-maligned cycle lane in Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough, is finally getting the axe, and it's a relief for many. This £1.7 million project, which earned the dubious title of 'Britain's most-hated cycle lane', is now undergoing a £2.7 million removal process, funded by the Tees Valley Combined Authority.

The lane's removal is a complex operation, involving the resurfacing of the road and the installation of new road markings and traffic signals. It's a four-week job, with diversions in place between Borough Road and Ayresome Street.

But here's where it gets controversial... the lane's removal has been a long time coming. Since its installation in 2022, it has been a source of contention, with injuries and claims that it provided an easy escape route for criminals.

One pensioner, aged 78, suffered a broken wrist and a black eye after tripping over a cycle lane separator. A cyclist, Paul Harris, also required stitches after colliding with one of these dividers, highlighting the dangers the lane posed.

And this is the part most people miss... the authority has paid out a significant amount in injury claims, with £85,728 going towards 15 claims, and more still being processed.

Local businesses also suffered, with a lack of parking and drop-off areas impacting trade. One worker even described the lane as a 'clear getaway for criminals', claiming it encouraged shoplifting and drug dealing.

The removal process has faced delays due to a political feud, but now, the lane's fate is sealed. In December 2024, the council approved its removal, with TVCA stepping up to cover the costs.

So, what do you think? Was this cycle lane a necessary evil, or an absolute disaster? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments. It's a controversial topic, and we welcome your opinions!
