Bold truth: a tough night left Charlton Athletic with a 3-1 home defeat to Portsmouth, and head coach Nathan Jones says the performance simply wasn’t good enough.
He emphasized that dominance in the physical battles largely favored the visitors for most of the match, and he pointed to a calamitous start as a key turning point. The first goal, he argued, was preventable: no one pressed Terry Devlin, and the ball sliced straight past the goalkeeper—a mistake he insists cannot happen. He also noted that the penalty decision was subjective, but pressed that better chances and clear opportunities were available, yet the overall display fell well short of what’s required.
Jones did not sugarcoat the message: 11 v 11 out there, and Portsmouth wanted it more. He warned that without basics being executed well, there’s no solid platform to build on in the Championship. He described the opening goal as a goalkeeping error and admitted the second one warranted review, but he framed it as part of a night where multitudes of issues combined to undermine the performance.
In response to the setback, Jones made three substitutions at half-time—Jayden Fevrier, Tyreece Campbell and Conor Coventry—and adjusted the formation in an effort to inject intensity and attacking threat. He acknowledged Fevrier’s impactful cameo, even though he dislikes making so many changes. He stressed that there was plenty happening in the first half, but most of it involved bookings, and he felt the referee’s decisions helped shape the game’s tempo—though not the result.
Beyond the scoreline, Jones asserted that the quality lapses extended beyond the goals conceded. While there were moments of quality, too much of the night resembled something far from Charlton’s identity. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but he insists the club must respond with renewed focus and intensity.
