Robert Murray of FanSided reports that the Dodgers are claiming outfielder Jack Suwinski off waivers. This move comes after the Pirates designated Suwinski for assignment to create space for Marcell Ozuna.
Suwinski, at 27, has had a rollercoaster ride over the past couple of years. Following a breakout 2023 season, he struggled to maintain his momentum. Despite starting last season on the big-league roster, he didn't last long, and his performance dipped significantly.
But here's where it gets controversial... Suwinski's stats in the minors were impressive, with a wRC+ of 150. However, in the MLB, he managed only a 55 wRC+ in 178 plate appearances. So, the question arises: was his 2023 performance a fluke, or can he bounce back?
The Pirates' recent acquisitions, including outfielders Jhostynxon Garcia and Jake Mangum, and the signing of Ryan O'Hearn, left little room for Suwinski to shine. With Ozuna locking down the DH spot, Suwinski's chances of making an impact with the Pirates were slim.
And this is the part most people miss... Suwinski's swing-and-miss tendencies suggest that his 2023 production might not be sustainable. He hit 26 home runs and stole 13 bases that season, but his strikeout rate was a concerning 32%.
Now, the Dodgers are giving Suwinski a fresh start. With Teoscar Hernandez, Andy Pages, and Kyle Tucker already locked into outfield roles, Suwinski will need to fight for his spot. The right-handed Pages has shown better performance against lefties, so a platoon situation could arise. However, Suwinski's defensive struggles, with a -16 Defensive Runs Saved as a center fielder, might limit his opportunities.
Suwinski's best chance to make the roster is to compete with Alex Call for the fourth outfielder position.
