Former NFL Star Offers Insightful Super Bowl Tips for Sam Darnold and Drake Maye
In the world of professional football, few experiences are as monumental as playing in the Super Bowl. This crucial game is not just a test of skill but also a profound moment in a player’s career. Recently, Matt Hasselbeck, a seasoned three-time Pro Bowler with an impressive 18-year tenure in the NFL, shared his valuable insights for two quarterbacks making their Super Bowl debuts: Sam Darnold and Drake Maye.
Hasselbeck, who notably took the Seattle Seahawks to Super Bowl XL against the Pittsburgh Steelers—though the Seahawks did not secure victory, ending the game at 21-10—offered some straightforward yet vital advice: have fun.
"Enjoy the moment," he expressed during an engaging interview with Fox News Digital. "My father, Don Hasselbeck, won Super Bowl XVIII with the Raiders against Washington, and I distinctly recall how much joy that team exuded. They were known for their silver and black colors, but more importantly, they played with an infectious enthusiasm."
He continued, reminiscing about his own early days with the Green Bay Packers, a team fresh off back-to-back Super Bowl victories led by the charismatic Brett Favre. "The atmosphere was vibrant; we were all having a blast. Even during my time with the Seahawks, although we may not have consciously realized it, we were truly enjoying ourselves—it felt less like a job and more like a passion."
Reflecting on his Super Bowl appearance, Hasselbeck completed 26 out of 49 passes for 279 yards, scoring one touchdown but also throwing one interception in the loss. He encouraged both Darnold and Maye to embrace the moment, advising them to focus on each play rather than the end goal.
"For Sam and the Seahawks or Drake Maye and the Patriots, my message is clear: take it one play at a time. Go all out for sixty minutes—leave everything on the field. When the final whistle blows and you check the scoreboard, it will show what it shows. Concentrate on what you can control, let loose, and remember to enjoy yourself. And don't forget, there’s no such thing as a 14-point touchdown; looking ahead doesn’t help. Just focus on the next play, regardless of the outcome—good or bad. Take it play by play!"
Both quarterbacks come into the Super Bowl with their fair share of injuries, which adds an intriguing layer of complexity to this championship matchup. The Seahawks are renowned for their formidable defense, which allowed the least number of points per game during the regular season, averaging just 17.1 points.
On the other side, the New England Patriots showcased their defensive prowess throughout the playoffs, successfully limiting high-powered offenses such as the Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans, and Denver Broncos to an astonishing average of merely 8.6 points per game.
Hasselbeck’s distinguished NFL career spanned four teams: ten seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, three with the Indianapolis Colts, two with the Green Bay Packers, and two with the Tennessee Titans. Over the course of 209 games, he completed 60.5% of his passes, amassing 36,638 yards, with 212 touchdowns and 153 interceptions to his name.
Fans eagerly anticipate the clash between the Seahawks and the Patriots in the Super Bowl, set to kick off on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET.
